In consultation with Mike's doctor, to reduce any further pain and suffering to him, Lorraine has chosen Saturday October 18 as the time to say her final goodbye to Mike. She has requested privacy on this day, so please respect this, NO visitors.
Her Minister will transport Lorraine to and from the hospital.

I spent today driving Mike Upton’s wife Lorraine to and from Sunnybrook Hospital where Mike is being cared for. The prognosis is not a good one. His vitals are stable, but he is completely unresponsive, partly owing to being heavily sedated. From what I understand from Lorraine and from listening in to Lorraine’s conversations with the medical staff Mike’s brain injury resultant of the accident being hit by a vehicle was very severe and they believe there is little or no hope of a positive outcome or recovery. Mike continues to be on life support in an ICU ward; he has been there for 11 days as of today. Lorraine has to make the decision when to take him off of life support. She wants to wait it out until all those all who wish to visit and say their “goodbyes” have done so. Based upon my conversations with her it will be towards the end of the coming week before she makes her decision. Many friends and colleagues have stepped up to provide Lorraine rides to and from the hospital each day in the morning and in the afternoon/evening. The visits are short, but are so important to Lorraine.
Will keep you all posted as more information comes available. Jeff Sisson has been instrumental in coordinating and scheduling daily rides for Lorraine to get her to and from the hospital each day.
For anyone in the Toronto area who wants to make a visit, Mike is in the ICU Wing D fourth (4th) floor, Room 22 / Bed 2 of Sunnybrook Hospital. I will forewarn any who makes the visit, Mike is unresponsive and there is no communication.

It’s been just over a week since Mike Upton was hit by a car while walking across a street. Lorraine asked me (Dave M) to give you an update. As of Friday October 10, Mike is still unconscious. He is breathing on his own with good vital signs and some movement but has not opened his eyes. The doctor says it is too early to tell the final outcome.
Lorraine truly appreciates all the thoughts, prayers, well wishes, positive waves and support she is receiving from all of her/Mike’s friends.
We’ll keep you posted when there is any significant change in Mike’s condition.

Folks - this the first of many emails to come on Mike’s progress. My intention is to report after my visits to the hospital each morning and afternoon. If there is nothing new to say then it will be a short update!
First, let’s get everyone up to speed. I am not sure how much you know so forgive me if I am repeating things.
First, Mike was hit by a car while walking on the sidewalk on Oct. 2. I was informed when 2 policemen came to my door. They said that he had been hit by a car that had missed a driveway and went up the curb. Mike was struck and fell on the sidewalk and hit is head. He is currently at Sunnybrook Hospital in an ICU unit for head injuries. He had surgery to remove a piece of his skull to reduce pressure on his swollen brain. He is hooked up to monitors and has electrical wires coming out of every orifice, including breathing apparatus. His head is wrapped in a blue dressing. Yesterday the removed the breathing tube in favour of a nasal cannula and they are encouraging him to breath on his own. His vital signs are good, which is hopeful. He is clearly fighting. They did shave his head, so no more long locks! However, he is still touch and go but it looks like he will survive. What functionality he will have is unknown, too early to tell.
Clearly we are not going to Florida on Monday Oct 6. We were scheduled to go for 2 1/2 weeks to get our drowned condo ready for our winter trip, which we won’t be doing either. So, there is a lot up in the air yet. I am visiting the hospital twice each day and will provide an update after each visit. They will be short if there is little change, which is quite likely. My friends Kate and Ross are here right now from Brockville. They are staying with her Mum and Dad who are next door to me in Parkland. They will be here until Monday night. After that then folks who want to visit can join me, 1 at a time. Hope I have been clear, my brain is also pretty bad due to sleep deprivation. Feel free to ask any questions, just don’t expect an immediate response. Mike is in for a long haul, as we all are in learning to cope. Please send your prayers.
Love, Lorraine
