Beerhunters Article Count:  16

The Toronto Beerhunters hockey club are a travelling tournament team made up of hockey friends and families primarily from the Toronto, Canada area.

More specifically, the "Beerhunters " refers to an amateur hockey team, the Beerhunters, who travel to Austria, Germany and Florida for international tournaments, blending hockey with exploring local breweries and beer culture, with popular spots including traditional brewpubs like the Augustiner Bräustübl in Salzburg and the Augustiner in Munich to enjoy craft beer scenes in Vienna and Munich. They experience famous Austrian beers like Stiegl, Ottakringer, and Gösser while playing in events like the Austrian Ice Hockey Classic. Whether it is enjoying Oktoberfest in Munich, Skiing in the Glacier above the town of Zell Am See or enjoying pints in Fussen at the famous “Ship Bar” the Beerhunters are always looking to enjoy all aspects of the local culture (and of course have a pint or two just to be polite).

Key Aspects of the Beerhunters' Austrian Trips:
  • Hockey Tournaments: They play in international amateur tournaments, often near scenic locations like Kaprun.
  • Brewery Visits: A core part of the trip involves visiting both large traditional breweries (Stiegl, Ottakringer) and smaller craft breweries.
  • Local Beer Culture: They explore regional specialties, from Vienna lagers to wheat beers, and enjoy traditional Austrian pubs (Gasthäuser).
Popular Austrian Breweries & Spots visited by the Beerhunters include:
  • Salzburg: Augustiner Bräu (huge beer garden), Stiegl Brewery (historic, large).
  • Vienna: Ottakringer Brauerei (local brewery), HOPS Craft Beer Pub, Beerlovers (craft bottle shop/brewery).
  • Tyrol/Vorarlberg: Starkenberger (castle brewery), Mohrenbräu, Frastanzer.
In essence, the spirit of the Beerhunters is about combining ice hockey with an extensive exploration of Germany and Austria's rich and diverse beer landscape.
