In this article I discuss what to do when your Air Conditioning condenser motor unit starts to make some concerning noises.
KeepRite Air Conditioner
My home air conditioner is a KeepRite unit that is approximately 12 years old.
Issue
Recently my A/C condenser unit started to make some significant noise when runnning. I suspect that it is the early warning of a the fan motor starting to go so it is time to investigate getting a replacement motor. Taking a quick look at my unit you can clearly see the part number for the fan motor: 1178652.
The motor is an ICP Heil Tempstar Condenser Fan Motor 1/10 HP 230 Volts with the following specs:
Scanning the internet, you can see that there is a superceeding part number for the motor which is 1186357.
The fan motor noise appears to be intermittent, however I decided it would be prudent to have a replacement motor on hand just in case the fan motor fails completely. So I decided to take a chance and purchase from AirXHeat a motor that claims to be compliant for $200 Cdn. (+$20 shipping) that has the appropriate SKU:
Fan Motor on Standby
I plan to keep this motor at the ready in case my motor fails - especially if goes during a hot spell. That way I can complete a quick swap out of the unit in an emergency as the last thing you want is a dead A/C unit during a heat wave. I will provide an update if/when the motor fails.
Update
The Condenser Fan Motor showed up in a couple days and looks like a direct replacement. But since the existing motor is still running, I will keep it shelved for now.
