TP-Link

This article describes the smart switches that I use integrated into my Google Home and Alexa devices. After an extensive review and testing a variety of switches, I landed on using the TP-Link set of switches - the HS200 for single pole switches and the HS210 for 3-way switches. TP-Link switches are easy to install and integrate with Google home or Alexa and have a similar look to a Leviton switch.

Installation / Wiring

The installation of either the HS200 or HS210 is relatively simple, however these switches do require a "neutral" line in order to operate. Here is the basic wiring for a HS200.

One of the key questions is whether the line/load lines (2 black wires) on the TP-Link switch need to be wired to the line or load lines?

The simple answer is "No". The two black wires can be installed on either the load or line wires.

Some users have reported issues when trying to connect their switch to their router and have swapped the 2 load/line wires on the switch and then the switch successfully connected. I have not experienced this issue, and remain skeptical of this, but it is worth noting that if you have an issue connecting to the switch, maybe try swapping the load/line wires??

KASA APP

TP-Link smart devices like the HS200 and HS210 are controlled using the TP-Link KASA app. Simply download the app, set up an account and add the devices that you install. The KASA app can then easily be linked / integrated into Alexa or the Google Home application.
